A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux

CHEER is a multiplayer dancing game for 1-10 players. Collaborate together to ensure all of the steps are hit in the right time to support your school!

This game isn't ideally played alone - so grab 9 of your friends and give it a go!

Instructions

Use WASD to move, left click or TAB to boost (the bar under your cheerleader will go up over time and boost can only use when there's some there) and right click to cheer.

Steps will appear in blue 5 seconds before they need to be reached, they will count down and turn yellow one second before they need to be reached, and will then turn green for one second. Ideally you will reach the step right as it appears for maximum points.

If a step has a yellow border, you must cheer in that location to complete the step. Orientation of the steps is for guidance but is not enforced.

Retrospective

This game was created in aproximately 7 days for Rainbow Jam 20, under the theme "Strength in numbers". The original goal was to make a game that very large numbers of people can play simultaneously.

Due to how rushed development was there are a  lot of race conditions and unusal states the game can get in.

Leaving the actual level (dance) design to the last minute was a bad idea as it turns out the editor isn't great for designing dances for many participants. The original plan was to have 10 or 20 people in a single highly co-ordinated dance - but the space is too small and the editing tools too imprecise for that.

If I was to revisit this, I'd re-work the editor so that instead of recording or placing steps arbitrarily, it would ask specifically for step placement every 500ms and restrict placement to ensure it is valid (in respect to distance from current location and other dancers' positions).

Anyway, I think it's fun to play around in for a while. So grab 9 friends and give the "Rave" dance a go!
